Manor by the lake

Previously known as Arle Court, Manor by the Lake was built in 1854, although the site it is built on has roots dating back to the Norman Conquest of 1066. However the By the nineteenth century, it had fallen into disrepair and the first family to live in the manor boldly commissioned the gothic revival beauty that stands today. A controversial departure from Cheltenham's Regency style.

Aviation and war

Sir George Dowty bought Arle Court in 1935 and under his stewardship his home served as a hub of innovation in aviation hydraulics. He and his family were responsible for the preservation and expansion of the estate.

It was also meeting space for government officials during World War Two and acted as a base for the Home Guard. The original dome that sat on top of the tower was removed to avoid being used as a navigational landmark for enemy aircraft.

cinema

In the 90s and early 00s the grounds became Cheltenham Film Studios. This is when the estate went through significant changes. However, so many of the original features still remain to this day.
